Who is a Mentor?

According to Merriam-Webster, a mentor is 'a trusted counselor or guide’.

A mentor is someone who has decided to take the time to connect with you to help you in one way or another.

Mentor Requirements: 

Why do we perform a background screen and what do we do?

Due to the nature of our community, our primary focus is to maintain a safe and nurturing environment for everyone.

All mentors must complete background screen which will include a reference check. You will also be required to provide identifying information.

  •  Be 21 years or older (18 – 20 applicants will be examined on a case-by-case basis)

  • Be willing to adhere to all HWG terms and conditions, including written policies and procedures.

  • Commit to a minimum of 30 minutes a week for 1 year virtually (chat, phone, video calls)

  • Be ready with a listening ear, advice, ideas, experiences to impact the life of a mentee

  • Currently functioning in a leadership role

  • Must come through a referral or be approved by an existing partner organization

  • Agree to respond to periodic assessment surveys

  • Must reflect values of the referring institution

  • Be willing to have a background screen
